Otsego Lake stretches north from Cooperstown to Mt. Wellington nine miles away. The mountain is known locally as "The Sleeping Lion" for it's suggestive outline. The lake is the area's dominant feature and figures in legend, romance, and history. Local people are working hard to protect Otsego Lake-to preserve it's water quality, to maintain it's fisheries, and to sustain it as a place for recreation and beauty.
